10 October marks the World and European Day against the Death Penalty.
On this occasion, the EU reaffirms its absolute opposition to the use of the death penalty. The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights provides that no one shall be condemned to the death penalty, or executed. The EU is actively working towards a universal abolishment of the death penalty and it is a strongly held policy view agreed by all EU Member States. The cancelation is therefore a key objective for the EU’s human rights policy.
