While France is gearing up to host the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in December 2015, AFD and the GoodPlanet Foundation are using images to highlight innovative and effective solutions combining the fight against climate change and economic development in AFD’s 71 agencies worldwide.
The exhibition comprises 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand from his famous “Earth from Above” series and presents concrete initiatives in four sectors : cities, agriculture, energy transition and climate change adaptation. Among the initiatives presented in this exhibition, 15 are supported by AFD and illustrate the wide range of financing in all the countries where AFD operates. This exhibition demonstrates that these initiatives illustrated by Yann Arthus-Bertrand are not isolated, and even replicable, and will help share AFD’s conviction to face the global challenge of climate change, that we are not without solutions.
AFD, a major and innovative international actor in climate finance
In line with its Climate Strategy, AFD uses a wide range of financial tools (investment loans, budget support, guarantees, equity or grant investments and technical assistance) to finance positive and realistic solutions to combat climate change. It benefits from and mobilizes resources from European and international mandates.
In Indonesia, since 2007, AFD takes concrete action for development and the fight against climate change in the sectors of energy, transportation, sanitation, fishery and forestry. With its mission to promote green and inclusive growth, AFD has work with the Government of Indonesia and SoEs by supporting projects which have a positive impact on the climate. With PT PLN, which is our strongest partner, AFD has been working on projects aiming at improving the energy efficiency of the electricity distribution and transmission in Java, Bali, Kalimantan and Sumatra. We are now teaming up to boost new Hydro PP projects. Geothermal and other renewable energy remain at the core of our strategy and operations in Indonesia.
The objectives of the GoodPlanet Foundation, headed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, are to raise public awareness of ecology, making it a central issue, and to inspire a desire to take positive action.
