A UNESCO master class online event – CONNECT-Asia

Bio-Asia and ICT-Asia regional programmes are implemented by the French scientific cooperation in partnership with UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific to strengthen high level collaboration between Asian and French research units in the fields of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and natural substances studies (from the study of biodiversity to its sustainable applications in agronomy, cosmetics, health, etc., and to biotechnologies). They fund, upon selection through an annual call for proposals, mobility costs of research projects involving at least 3 research units of France and Asia.

French scientific partners include the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Research Institute for Development (IRD), the Centre for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM), the National Institute for computational sciences (INRIA), the Institut Mines-Télécom, the Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER), Pasteur Institute, the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA), as well as French Ministry for National Education, Higher Education and Research (MENESR).

ICT & Bio- Asia Regional Workshop, hosted by the Indonesian Institute for Sciences (LIPI), is open for participation of researchers from Asia and France. It offers debates on ICT and Bio research strategies in Asia and their role with regard to post-2015 challenges, brainstorming on new avenues for triangular cooperation between French and Asian research units in relevant areas, reports on previous projects results, and discussion on the terms of the 2014 call for proposals.

UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific will broadcast online some of the sessions as a master class event through its CONNECT-Asia network ( ).

The workshop will focus on the scientific agenda for ICT and BIO research with regard to post-2015 Challenges on Day 1. Day 2 and Day 3 will offer Scientific Focus Sessions, open to proposals submissions, as listed below.
Presentations shall not exceed 20 mn.

Focus sessions :

ICT & BIO common focus :
• Biotechnologies

ICT Focus :
• ICT and disaster risk reduction
• Health Geomatics
• Information infrastructure management and data analysis

BIO Focus :
• Agronomy, agroforestry and environment
• Biodiversity : industrial applications & sustainability (food processing and food security, cosmetics, etc)
• Therapeutic uses of biodiversity

A call for proposals targeting research projects in ICT-Asia and Bio-Asia relevant fields will be launched after this regional workshop. Projects have to involve at least two Asian research units and one French research unit. Grants fund mobility costs only.
