Death of Mr Francisco Xavier do Amaral, first President of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste
We heard with great sadness of the passing on 6 March of Mr Francisco Xavier do Amaral, who on 28 November 1975 declared Timor Leste ’s independence and thus became the first President of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste.
France wishes to honour the memory of this prominent figure of Timor Leste fight for independance, which was ultimately restored in 2002 with help from the United Nations.
After 2002, Mr Francisco Xavier do Amaral has taken an active part in the democratic life of Timor Leste as a member of Parliament. He was once again a candidate in the coming presidential elections.
France extends its condolences to Mr Francisco Xavier do Amaral’s family and to the peole and the governement of Timor Leste.
